Last Wednesday Before Break

I like the new What's Up Wednesday banner -- winter wonderland edition. What's Up Wednesday is a weekly blog hop hosted by Jaime Morrow. What I'm reading
I'm wrapping up Proxy and Bess of Hardwick: Empire Builder. The first is for fun, the second was for class. I'm also frantically reading my history textbook as I study for my exam in...let's see...an hour. Gulp.
What I'm writing

I wrote a post about dealing with NaNo burnout. I wrote a review of MILA 2.0. Other reviews are in the works, but have been put on hold while I handle finals. I had to write a manifesto proposing a new aesthetic movement in theatre for one of those finals. Ack. And that was just one part of a three-part final.
I have also been trying to get back to writing normally as I work on Contracted. I have to keep reminding myself that I'm not "done" with it just because NaNo is over...and that I can break the NaNo "rules" when I write...
What else I'm up to
Exams. Ugh. I finish my last one and go home today. This must be what they mean when they say "senioritis." I've never approached exams kicking and screaming like this before, even when I have been far less prepared. I am being asked to think about too many things. I have also been blatantly procrastinating and wasting time on the NaNo forums.
What inspires me right now
Pentatonix is helping me get into the Christmas spirit...which has thus far been eluding me. In particular, this:

If that doesn't make you feel at least a little Christmasy, your name might be Scrooge. ;)

  1. As you know, I kind of love that Pentatonix "Little Drummer Boy" rendition too. :-) Good luck with your exam! You might even be done it by now, but good luck anyway. I suppose being stuck in NaNo mode is not necessarily a bad thing. The discipline is certainly a good thing. Have a wonderful week, Laura!

    1. Thank you :) I think I did pretty well on it. Pentatonix is awesome...hopefully their rendition of Little Drummer Boy will make it on the radio this year.

  2. Yeah, I remember senoritis. By the end, I just did. not. care. At least you're close to the winter break now. Hope it all goes well ^_^ Have a wonderful week!

    1. Thanks, you too! As for senioritis, I'm less at "do not care" and more at "why are people asking me to think about so many things at once?!?"

  3. I'm so impressed with writers who are also students! So much to fill your time with. It's been awhile since my college days, but I distinctly remember senioritis kicking in. Plus I was an RA in the residence halls (dorms) and being a senior among mostly underclassmen, well I loved it up until those last few months then I was DONE.

    1. Thank you. It does get stressful. I considered being an RA, but then I realized I wouldn't be able to choose which dorm I lived in and I would also probably have to deal with underclassman drama, so...nope. Thanks for stopping by!

  4. Hey, yeah! That video brought tears to my eyes at the end, (or the music did, more specifically,) and I couldn't even say why! Thanks for sharing it.

Those are good tips for dealing with Nano burnout too. Nice to meet you.

    1. Hello! Nice to meet you, too. :) Funny, I also teared up the first time watching it. Something about the way the arrangement starts out so simple and builds so well. Or maybe just their genuine love of music.

21 Minus Blog Tour Launch!

Hello and welcome to the 21 Minus blog tour! Are you excited? Good. You should be. :) 2 1 Minus, hosted by Anna Waggener , aims to showcase writers 21 and under. With that in mind, I present my interview of 15-year-old writer and blogger Nick Hight   from New Zealand. He doesn't know who interviewed him yet, and I don't know who interviewed me. That's part of how you win the contest -- but more details on the rules after the interview. Interview with teen writer Nick Hight: 1. Why did you decide to start a blog? Because someone I know -- who’s not even one of my mates -- told me I should. Seriously, that’s the only reason. She said I should give it a go, and I thought, why not? At the time, I didn’t intend to meet other writers online or post about writing or anything like that at all -- it was just a way for me to rant to the world. 2. What is your favorite book or movie and why? This is a tough one, because I have a whole heap of favourite books and movies...

Audiobook Review: The Boy Who Drew Monsters by Keith Donohue

I'm behind on these. There's a whole list of wonderful books that I've been meaning to roll out reviews for. Unfortunately, NaNoWriMo got in the way.  But now it's December and I can get back to what I love writing: snarky reviews. I could have kicked off the next series of Diverse Reads reviews with a nice review. But I'm in a bad mood. Have been since November 8th. Actually, I've been in a bad mood since 2016 started with a slew of celebrity deaths and terrible news.  So a negative review it is. Spoilers below. I could not give less of a fuck whether or not I spoil this horrible book. Actually, since the whole point of this is to convince you NOT to read it, I'm going to try to spoil as much as I possibly can. Brace yourself. This is going to be a long one.  Summary After the swimming accident that nearly claimed the lives of him and his friend, Jack Peter has been severely agoraphobic. What his parents don't seem to understand is how s...

Examiner is gone (and so are all my reviews)

Well, this is frustrating. Examiner.com was a crowd-generated entertainment/opinion/"news" site where I reviewed books. I reviewed books there since college, and while it didn't exactly make me millions I enjoyed it. In June I got an email from Examiner after a long break from the site. It offered an incentive for returning writers through the end of June. I figured, hey! Why not? and wrote them some bitchy reviews (and few nice ones as well). What was really nice was the fact that they'd updated their quality standards since I'd left.  One of the reasons I left was the subpar content; I was putting a lot into these reviews for very minimal rewards while other people wrote 200-word, highly biased, often grammatically incorrect pieces about dog abuse or celebrities and made hundreds-and-more dollars a month. When I returned to the site, I was one of the contributors whose content was consistently high-quality. I thus wasn't subject to the new mandato...
